Dan Weaver, the Bestorq representative, recently taught a class called “belts 101”, where Nevada Cooler Pad was in attendance. The training was held at Bombard Mechanical which employees over 500 employees locally. They are one of the biggest contractors in Las Vegas. They service and install many aspects of commercial and mechanical services.
Many people in North America have not heard of Bestorq. The owner worked for Goodyear for over 30 yrs and has an extensive background in engineering. Bestorq is the 2nd largest belt manufacturer in the world, they produce 1.2 million belts a day for worldwide distribution. However, their presence is relatively new in North America. All belts are designed and tested in Lincoln, Nebraska.
By the end of 2018, Bestorq will have single largest belt testing facility in the country.
Our training at Bombard Mechanical on May 30th covered Belts 101. This included how to install belts, make them last longer and make motors and bearings last longer too. So we had the staff tension belts based on “feel” as a demonstration that most technicians, although very knowledgeable, simply can not tension a belt properly this way. That is why Nevada Cooler Pad now offers belt tension tools that can eliminate the guesswork. Also, we learned that once a belt is installed, it takes about 72 hours for the belt to properly “seat” in the pulley. The belt loses 40% tension in that first 72 hours. The belt is not stretching but rather seating itself in the pulley. Ideally, you should re-tension belts after that 72 hour time period. However, we know most technicians are just too busy to go back. However, if you tension the belt correctly the first time, you do not have to go back after 72 hours to re-tension.
